5 Favorite Whiskey Cocktail Recipes

It’s whiskey time! We’re whipping up my five favorite mixed drinks that are both delicious and relatively simple to make. We’ll be making a cherry old-fashioned, Manhattan, Highball, The Godfather, and Hot Toddy.

Cherry Old-Fashioned

Ingredients:

  • 2 ounces Bourbon
  • 6 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 1 raw sugar cube
  • 1 maraschino cherry
  • 1/2 ounce maraschino cherry liquid
  • Orange slice
  • Ice cubes

Glassware/Tools:

  • Rocks glass
  • Muddler
  • Jigger
  • Stirring spoon
  • Knife

How to Make:

  • Place sugar cube into rocks glass. Splash 6 dashes of the Angostura bitters onto the sugar cube. Add 1 maraschino cherry to the glass, and muddle everything together very well.
  • Add 2 ounces of bourbon, and 1/2 ounce of maraschino cherry liquid from the jar.
  • Add 1-2 handfuls of ice cubes to glass, and stir.
  • Garnish by placing a thin, half-slice of orange into the glass.

Manhattan

Ingredients:

  • 2 ounces Rye
  • 1 ounce Sweet vermouth
  • 4 dashes Angostura bitters
  • Ice cubes
  • 2 maraschino cherries

Glassware/Tools:

  • Manhattan or Martini glass
  • Mixing glass with strainer
  • Mixing spoon
  • Cocktail pick

How to Make:

  • Add 2 ounces rye and 1 ounce sweet vermouth to mixing glass.
  • Add 4 dashes of Angostura bitters to mixing glass, followed by 2 handfuls of ice cubes.
  • Stir, then strain the liquid out and into your glass.
  • Garnish with 2 maraschino cherries on a cocktail pick.

Highball

Ingredients:

  • 2 ounces whiskey of your choice (can be bourbon, rye, Scotch, or anything else)
  • Ginger Ale
  • Ice cubes
  • Lemon slice (optional)

Glassware/Tools:

  • Tall highball glass

How to Make:

  • Fill glass 2/3 with ice cubes.
  • Add 2 ounces of whiskey, and then fill the glass mostly to the top with ginger ale.
  • Optionally, garnish with a thin lemon slice.

The Godfather

Ingredients:

  • 2 ounces Scotch
  • 1 1/2 ounces Amaretto
  • Ice cubes (or one large ice ball, optionally)
  • Orange peel

Glassware/Tools:

  • Rocks glass

How to Make:

  • Place ice into glass. Add 2 ounces of Scotch and 1 1/2 ounces of Amaretto.
  • Stir. Twist orange peel over glass to release oils, and rub the rim of the glass with it. Place orange peel into glass.

Hot Toddy

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup water
  • 1 black tea bag
  • 1 Tablespoon honey
  • 1 Tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 1/2 ounces whiskey (blended Irish whisky is commonly used)
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • Half-slice of lemon

Glassware/Tools:

  • Glass mug
  • Knife
  • Kettle to heat water

How to Make:

  • In a separate glass, combine 1 cup of hot water with 1 teabag, and allow to steep for a few minutes.
  • In the meantime, fill your hot toddy mug with hot water to heat the mug until ready for use.
  • When the tea is finished steeping, empty the hot water from the toddy mug.
  • To the toddy mug, add 1 Tablespoon honey and 1 Tablespoon lemon juice. Then add 1 1/2 ounces of whiskey.
  • Discard tea bag, and pour the brewed tea into the toddy mug.
  • Garnish by placing 1 cinnamon stick and a half-slice of lemon into the mug.
